A cappella has its night in SCERA ‘Supershow’

Postby Amy Malkoff » Thu May 24, 2012 2:08 pm

Three a cappella groups featured on NBC's vocal competition, "The Sing-Off," will be finding their pitch and pitching their vocals again -- this time on the SCERA stage Monday night.

The Memorial Day concert, "A Cappella Supershow," opens the SCERA Shell Outdoor Theatre Summer Season and will headline Pentatonix, the group which won the third season of "The Sing-Off"; Delilah, a sassy, all-ladies group; and Brigham Young University's very own nine-man a cappella powerhouse, Vocal Point.

McKay Crocket, a member of Vocal Point, which represents the BYU School of Music, said traveling to Los Angeles in 2011 to perform on the televised, judged show was a step out of the ordinary for the family-friendly, self-proclaimed "awkwardly endearing" singing group.

It was a great show. Vocal Point was on top of their game, very tight harmonies and choreography as you'd expect. Delilah was shaky on their first number, but got substantially better. What Do You Want From Me and Grenade (both performed on The Sing-Off) were terrific. But Pentatonix stole the show. Not a single sour note. They sound better live than most a cappella groups sound recorded. I liked (nearly?) all of their covers better than I liked the original songs. They blew away the entire crowd, too, not just the a cappella nerds such as myself. Their standing ovation started as soon as they announced "This next one will be our last song" and continued all through the song--I'm not sure I've ever seen that before at a concert! Bottom line: if you ever get a chance to go see them, don't miss the opportunity.

Here's a video of the crowd: https://www.facebook.com/BYUVocalPoint. By my estimate there were probably just under 4000 people there. It was pretty funny that all three performing groups took the time to snap pictures of the crowd. It was also funny how the people way off to the side and slightly behind the stage went crazy whenever one of the groups noticed them.

Again, it’s hard to restrict my answer to one type only. I like a lot of music. The genre can range from classics through pop or jazz to, of course, contemporary a cappella of any style. There are so many nice songs in the world… In general, I can say that my most favorite songs are usually those very sad ones and very happy and cheerful ones.
