Slack or Skype for Business

As of October 2019, it is not the but Microsoft Teams that is the rival of Slack. Microsoft launched the Microsoft Teams app that not just competes with Slack, but also comfortably outperforms it and the numbers show.
As of date, the user base of Microsoft Teams is roughly 30% larger than that of Slack. Microsoft has done well in helping users transition from Skype for Business to Microsoft Teams seamlessly. In hindsight, several factors worked in favor of Microsoft Teams even though it was launched much later than Slack. For starters, it was built specifically to address the flaws that had crept into Skype for Business; namely the necessity to use separate apps for handling the entire spectrum of functionality.
Microsoft Teams has been designed as a bundled app in the Office 365 suite. This allows users to use other Microsoft products in tandem with Teams. Although Slack too has integration capabilities, it is nowhere as seamless as with the Microsoft offering.
Additionally, Microsoft Teams offers 1 TB of storage space at the organizational level with up to 15 GB per file which is much higher than the 20 GB that Slack offers.
Microsoft Teams benefits from the strong enterprise-level security features that are built into Office 365, something that Slack cannot replicate easily.
Most importantly, Microsoft Teams inherits the strong video conferencing abilities of Skype that no application including Slack has managed to provide. As many as 80 participants can participate in a Microsoft Teams call compared to Slack's 15.
Long story short, if you plan to migrate from Skype, it would be a much better idea to stick with Microsoft's product (Microsoft Team) to retain the backward compatibility with the other Office 365 products if you have subscribed rather than shelling out extra to purchase Slack subscription. However, if you are still interested in the comparison, Skype still had an edge over Slack primarily because of its core competency that revolved around a collaborative approach and its watertight security features. So, there is little to be gained by switching from the Microsoft product.
