Sizing an initial DVD run for an a cappella documentary

Postby michaelmarcus » Wed Aug 17, 2011 11:40 am

Back in 2009, my father (a director/producer of corporate videos) made his first feature film, a documentary about the collegiate a cappella world called "Sounds Good to Me." Some of you may have seen it, or even been featured in it. The film made the rounds at a few regional festivals, but nothing else came of it. Now, we are finally in discussions to secure the proper rights to actually distribute and sell this film to the public.

As part of this process, we need to come up with a ballpark estimate for the size of an initial DVD run, since this would obviously affect the amount paid in royalties. (For the purposes of this discussion it will be convenient to set aside the notion of digital distribution for the time being.) You folks are the core audience for this, so what do you think? 500? 1,000? More? How big is this community, anyway?

A possibly related/helpful question: College groups, what size runs are you doing these days for your albums, and how quickly do you sell out?
