How Much to Charge?

Postby Furmata.Acappella » Tue Oct 08, 2013 2:13 pm

I am the director of the University of Washington's Furmata A Cappella. We are a 16 person co-ed group. We have just recently began fundraising and I have no clue what a normal hiring rate should be! Currently we have a gig offer for a swanky father-daughter dance where we would be singing for 40 minutes on two separate dates. What is a normal rate for an a cappella group to ask for? Thank you!

(First time here so excuse me if forum etiquette is wrong!)

I have been trying to research this as well. Rates will vary greatly by area with any music/art, but I can't imagine it being too too different from SoCal.

I think it really depends on the quality of your performance. From the research I've done, a quality group would charge between $300-500 for a 45 minute performance. While that seems like a lot to me, I've found that its not too much of a stretch for those looking for great entertainment.

But, I currently sing with an acappella group (28 members) who is eagerly working to improve the quality of our performance and are charging $100 for a 30 minute (about 8-10 song) per performance.

I want to be clear I wrote this from the Semi-Pro angle. We (http://www.5bitmusic.com) aren't a pro group. We do our best to make sure our show is professional in both music style, quality, and performance, but we are a semi-pro group who all have day jobs and families.

It really seems to depend on the venue and you're reputation/experience. We often donate our time or charge significantly less for fundraisers and causes we believe in. We also have a large client list and references which generally helps to drive home the fact that we are worth the money.

We started off taking any gig. If we could get $50-$100 that was awesome, but we would do it for free no matter what the event, how long the gig, etc. We just wanted to get out and perform and start honing our craft. As we built a name for ourselves we began charging more. Still, we aren't trying to make a living off of it, it's more about getting to perform and having fun. 3 years on and we now make significantly more than that $100 an hour though. ;)

- Is it a fund raiser? (we always charge less or donate our time for good causes. If we can help people, animals, the planet, etc with music then we are all for giving back!)
- Set Length? (15 min is a lot different than 2 hours. ha)
- Day/Time? (we all have day jobs so weekday gigs we tend to try and make a little more $)
- Corporate or Private performance? (this is not always, but often a good indicator of what kind of budget they might have in mind)
- Do we need to bring our sound system? (this requires a lot more time and effort on our part and easily adds another 60-90 minutes to our overall time commitment)
- Casual or Formal setting? (this can also help you determine the anticipated budget. Also, if we have to drag our suits around it's more dry cleaning bills)
- Number of expected attendees?
- Distance from our central location?
- Special requests? (we charge extra if we arrange something specifically for the event)

Why are you plagerizing anothers input? I'm not sure this is the place to be openly presenting yourself as a plagerizer. Now that a whole 3 people know...

Hello friends. I think there is no harm in taking a second opinion on this one. And as far as posting it over a forum like this, i feel it is absolutely perfect to be interacting with people having similar passions.
