transit is very excited to announce our very first exclusively a cappella Songwriting Contest.

This is a chance for songwriters young and old to get their music heard on a National Stage, and an attempt to foster increased creativity in the A Cappella Community at large. We believe that original music is a hugely important part of the musical community, and would like to give people a chance to experiment and further their songwriting careers.

The Grand Prize Winner will have his/her winning song professionally recorded by transit to be released and highlighted as part of their upcoming album. You will also receive:

1. An opportunity to sit in with transit in studio as your song is recorded!
2. Meet and greet weekend with the members of transit.
3. Have your voice recorded on one or more tracks as part of transit's upcoming album release.
4. Personal promotion for your work by transit to other members of the music and recording industry, including professional bands, songwriters, studios, and agencies.
5. $100 in free personalized transit merchandise and/or Studio Equipment.

Wow, we've already gotten a LOT of response on this, even already getting some early submissions! Just wanted to post a quick update on a few questions we've had so far....

Q: "Who is allowed to submit?"
A: Anyone! We are encouraging people from all backgrounds to enter...from first time-songwriters to seasoned a cappella professionals.

Q: "Can I submit online?"
A: Of course. As long as you include all of the submission requirements (mp3, lyricsheet, and a physically written or otherwise easily understandable arrangement) you can of course send us submissions through http://www.transitvocalband.com

Q:"What if I don't know how to read music?"
A: That's ok! Just do everything you can to record your voice (or someone else's!) on all of the parts and give us as much detail as possible so we know how you want the song to sound.

Q:"I have no way of recording all the parts of a song. Can I still submit?"
A: Yes you can. While we prefer to hear all of the parts so we can truly get the theme and message behind your song, it is ok if you only submit to us the basic melody or backgrounds. It's ok if you don't have a professional recording method, that's what we're here for! Just fire up the old garage band, iPhone, or a casette tape hand-recorder (if you're old enough to know what that is) and let us hear it! We will be sure to work closely with the winning songwriter to make sure we understand everything about the song.

If you have any more questions, please feel free to contact us, or just visit http://www.transitvocalband.com

Thanks a ton to everyone who has already expressed interest, and keep 'em coming!

There’s still one month left to submit to the transit Vocal Songwriting Competition!
We're pretty excited about what we've already heard, and can't wait to see what else you guys have to show us. And as an added incentive, we've decided that one random contestant will be chosen to come sit with us IN STUDIO and watch the album being made! Who knows, maybe we'll even let you sing on it a little! So get out there and keep writing, we want to hear the best you've got!

Good question. While Public Domain lyrics don't strictly require licensing, we are doing our best to work in the spirit of this contest and encouraging everyone to write completely original music, rather than creative covers of other popular song. Of course if you are only planning on putting a line or two from a well known song, I'm sure we can allow a bit of leeway. Can you be a bit more specific into what lyrics you would use/how they would be used?

I'd been doing some recent choral work with the text of Percy Shelley, an early 19th century romantic poet. I was thinking of submitting something with the stouxingers setting of "tired of all these (shakespeare) as an example of the style in mind.
