Review of an old album?

Postby jpchip » Wed Oct 06, 2004 12:43 pm

For whatever reason, the Chips never sent in Unplugged (the album just prior to one eighty-eight (which was the album just prior to the now-infamous Vowel Movements)) for review. Every time I listen to "Mysterious Ways" [U2] from that album, I come here wanting to see what the reviewers said about it, because I love it to death. If I host the track, would anyone be interested in hearing it?

OK, I've hosted it via GeoCities for the time being, but I'm sure the bandwidth for that will run out quickly, so I'll host it from my school account ASAP.

The Chips' best track to date, imho. Arranged and solo'd by Eric Fosbury, now part of the Hyannis Sound.

Alright, just listened to it (at Bill Hare's place!)

Overall, i love the energy on the track - you guys sound like you're having a blast! Tuning's in general good (some occasional slips, but nothing that will rile any but the most picky ear). And while the soloist draws out certain syllables a little too long for my taste (like the "ai" in "alRIGHT"), he nails it tone-wise and stylistically. Well mixed VP, and well mixed track in general; I like how the mixing enhances the voices without reducing you guys to robots (even though the robotic sound is just as valid and works in some cases... not a purist here :)).

Arrangement wise, the arrangement works, but I tend to enjoy busier arrangements of this song, and there are several excellent ones out there. I am not really a fan of the loop that opens the song ("jow oh doo jen neh"); i think something busier, more wall-of-soundish would've worked better to open the song with a bang. Also, it is just a little too obviously looped (the little quirks in the execution of that loop repeat again and again, highlighting themselves...). I think the ending could have been done better too... right now the fadeout is a little too abrupt.

But if I reviewed a CD with this standard of production and singing and soloists in general, I'd probably give it a 4.0 or better :).
